A year to remember..... Take a look back at 2008 highlights from the Drexel Star pages.
The year 2008 has been event-filled. On the national side, the economy, with food and fuel prices have caused much concern for everyone. By October, the county teetered on recession with parts of America deemed to be in a recession. Missouri was one of those areas. Oil prices stayed high most of the year but by mid-October, gasoline was under three dollars a gallon. Some food prices were also down a bit, but, people were losing homes because of the credit crisis. The government came up with a plan to bail out Wall Street over the concerns from Main Street.
Also at the top of the news, a weary American population began, late in the fall, to pay more attention to the Presidential candidates, after a long, nearly two year campaign. Now that Barack Obama has been elected, it is hoped the economic turmoil will settle.
Locally, a lot of things occurred to make a memorable year. Do you remember?
January 3 - The Citizens Bank moved into a new building on Friday, December 21, 2007. Bank employees are now working from a bright new facility, serving Drexel area residents. Drexel Police, along with several other law enforcement agencies attempted to stop a driver who was on a blue, racing type four wheeler. The individual was able to use snow-covered roads to his/her advantage and elude officers. The driver almost struck police vehicles and a Bates County deputy who was on foot. The case remains under investigation.
January 10 - A majestic bald eagle is recuperating after being found in the rural Cleveland area, weakened from lead poisoning. The bird is expected to survive. The Drexel Library was overrun with mice, last week but these were the cute and good kind. The little felt mice were created by the Story Hour Gang, during a crafting session.
January 17 - The Drexel City Council votes to place a revenue bond question on the April ballot. Voters will decide, yea or nay, on water improvements for the city. Thomas and Joan Endicott celebrated their...
