What does “Drexel” mean to you?
“Living here in Drexel reminds me of my own childhood,” said one resident. “It’s the same feeling I want for my kids, the Mayberry feel, the safety factor, the ‘trust your neighbor’ feeling.” Why wouldn’t you want to raise your kids here? It’s like taking a step back in time.”
The Drexel Community Betterment Corporation (DCBC) members held their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Drexel Community Center. The noon whistle kicked off the luncheon meeting, sponsored by Welborn’s Thriftway and catered by Ward Billings, with twelve in attendance.
The invocation was provided by President Tyler Black.
Treasurer Greg Mullinax was unable to attend but sent a report. Black stated that the balance in the general checking account is at $1,236.46 and the Drexel Dollar account has $335. Two checks had been written: one to the Drexel Star for $41.10 for the Easter Egg Hunt ad and the other to Jessie Russell, $21.02, for decorations at the Main Street cottage house.
Sue Wishon reported that Drexel’s application was not chosen by the Missouri Main Street Connection in the spring selection. However, there are already plans to reapply again in the fall. Wishon also stated that on June 18-22 additional training will be held in Kansas City and DCBC’s registration fees would be half price since the $100 membership to the program had been paid. More information will be forthcoming when the training brochure is received.
Wishon, Marc Finke and Anita Brown reported on the webinar they attended at Craig Arnold’s office. Arnold is the Executive Director of the Cass County Corporation of Economic Development. Over 7,000 people were listening to this webinar which discussed several case studies showing different ideas for business and community development and branding of communities. Creative thinking along with a strong “driver” or director played a large part in all the case studies discussed.
