Reading Program to kick off at local library

Make a Splash - - Read” is the theme for the children’s Summer Reading Program that began June 1 at all Cass County Public Libraries.
On Monday, June 7th, Drexel’s branch will kick off the program with a super “Water Fest” in the back yard.
Summer fun in and out of the water is the focus of crafts, story times, and activities at the branches in Archie, Drexel, Garden City, Harrisonville, Northern Resource Center - Belton, Pleasant Hill and the CCPL Bookmobile.
Highlights include the return of the “Reptiles & More” with Pete Abbate at all branches, including the Bookmobile at the Freeman Community Center. Rhonda Kasper will also feature fun nutrition-based activities, stories, and crafts. Each branch has weekly story times with special crafts and activities planned. Look on page 2 of the Family page for detailed events in Drexel. The first scheduled event will be with Rhonda Kasper next Thursday, the 10th. She will read a great story about water and then teach everyone about the water cycle. Of course there will be a super snack and a crazy game.
“Make Waves at Your Library” is the 2010 teen theme. Teens will enjoy water activities and crafts at their local library branch. The reading requirements are 5 books for sixth thru twelfth grade.
Each reader who completes the program goals by the July deadline will receive a new book. The reading requirements are 25 read-to-me books for pre-readers, 10 books for readers through fifth grade, and 5 books for sixth through twelfth grade youth. The award books are funded by donations from Harrisonville Wal-Mart and Cass County Public Library Foundation.
The purpose of the library’s Summer Reading Program is to encourage children to read all year. Studies show that participation in a summer reading program can improve reading proficiency. Summer reading prevents loss in reading achievement and school progress. The excitement of a new book also motivates young readers to keep reading after their summer reading goals are achieved.
