Journalism students branch out

Journalism students at Drexel High School to provide stories for Drexel Star readers.

Schools across the nation are having to make cuts to their budgets. No surprise that Drexel would be one of them. One out of the many, is in the journalism program, but with a partnership-type program in the works, the integrity of the program will not be sacrificed. Just a few less Bobcat Beats will be provided to our readers. We announced a few weeks ago that the journalism program had to decrease the number of issues of the Bobcat Beat from eighteen to four for this school year. Keeping the Bobcat Beat, although fewer, allows students the opportunity to learn the design and layout skills of building a publication. The first is included in this issue.
Readers will notice that we have a few new members of our staff, well sort of. The school journalism class will be given assignments to cover, photograph and write about. The assignments will typically be of school events. Then, they will bring it to you through the pages of the local newspaper.
By teaming with our growing young journalists, students will still be able to learn the fundamentals of covering an event, capturing the highlights through a lens, and putting pen to paper while they tell the story, without opinion, of course.
We are psyched that our local students have been given this opportunity and are equally excited for you to read their hard work. Here is the first of many.....

At the start of the year, Drexel High School’s Journalism Class came to the decision to unite with the Yearbook Staff due to the sparse amount of students in both classes. Now, with a total of eight students, the class will be publishing four issues a year of the Bobcat Beat in the Drexel Star.
