Drexel School Board meets, field work underway

The Drexel R-IV School Board of Education met in regular session on Monday December 15th, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Media Center. Those members present were: President Christyne Hellebuyck, Vice President Vic Shipley, Treasurer Kim Hocker, Members Chuck Martin, Ronnie Jacobs, Brad Lancaster, and Brenda Hadley, Elementary Principal Jeff Levy, JH/HS Principal Robbie Shepherd, Superintendent Dr. Judy Stivers, and Secretary Linda Moles. Visitors were: John and Kevin Gunnels, Ken Reece, and Robyn Seba. The meeting was called to order by President Hellebuyck, and opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence.
Motion to approve the consent agenda, consisting of approval of proposed agenda and previous minutes, approval of warrant report, authorization of payment of bills, and approval of financial summary of funds, was made by Hocker, seconded by Hellebuyck, and carried with six (6) yes votes, Martin abstaining due to a possible conflict of interest on the warrant report.
Next, Mayor Ken Reece was recognized. He requested the district appoint a representative for the Enhanced Enterprise Zone Advisory Board. In 2007 Jerry Whalen was named to the position, but currently the district has no spokesperson on the committee. Due to tax break incentives for new businesses it would be in the districts best interest to have representation on the committee. Martin made a motion that the nomination read “the district superintendent” be the representative of the district for the EEZAB. Motion was seconded by Lancaster, and passed unanimously.
At this time, the Principals gave their reports to the board. Levy mentioned the Christmas concert schedule and recognized Mr. Spencer and Mrs. Meerkatz for making the D. A. R. E. program a huge success for the 6th grade students. He also thanked Mr. Spencer for the wonderful lunch he prepared for the staff on December 10th.
Next, Shepherd addressed the board making note of key dates to remember. The end of the first semester is January 9th, a Male Beauty Pageant was to be held on December 23rd as part of Student Council holiday activities for the student body, and the Winter Formal is scheduled for January 17th. Mr. Shepherd held a workshop December 12th with students preparing to take the ACT in December and February. Robyn Seba and Tammy Bartholomew will be conducting a workshop on January 14th, and Clarence Kellogg and Shepherd will have another ACT workshop on February 11th for students who will take the ACT in the upcoming year.
At this time, Dr. Stivers gave her Superintendent’s Report. HVAC long-term plans....
