Drexel in running for industrial developer

A very nice brunch was catered for the Drexel Community Betterment Corporation meeting at the Community Center on Tuesday, August 25. Hosts were Stewart Liquor and Patty’s Hair Care. The brunch, prepared by Ward Billings, featured an omelet bar with fried potatoes, biscuits and gravy, fruit salad and cinnamon rolls. Lunch items included salad and iced tea. Those present were: Herby Thomas, Anita Brown, Ward Billings, Greg Mullinax, Marc Finke, Jim and Carol Welborn, Patty Dreher, Lynette Harris, Patsy Stewart, Craig Arnold, Dave Alburty, and guest Jackie Schlagle of the Drexel Health Clinic.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and the invocation was kindly provided by Greg Mullinax.
Treasurer Greg Mullinax stated that the balance in the general checking account is $1,606.94. He stated that $30 was spent last month and the Drexel Dollar account totals $375.
Jim Welborn, Chairman of the Board of Cass County Corporation for Economic Development (CCCED), is arranging a tour with Crowder College and co-promotion of Cass County education ultimately leading to a junior College here. The tour will be on a Saturday, to the Crowder College campus in Neosho. Crowder has four campuses with different specialties. For example, one campus is primarily nursing, and another is industrial welding and other trades. All their instructors and advisors tell their students to be sure to carry a bunch of resume’s with them at graduation. There is potential of having a Crowder College of Cass County, serving non-traditional students (older students and technical trades students). Having this set up would be an attraction tool for companies. For example, Harley Davidson works with Metropolitan Community Colleges and KCADC to train Harley’s workers using some state funding to defray the training costs. This tipped the scales in Kansas City’s favor to get the plant, which now employs several hundred people.
