Drexel residents to see water rate increase

Drexel Lions Club member Wayne Harris requested permission last Monday night from Drexel City Council for the Lions Club to plant two new trees in H.T. Smith Park. He stated that they were looking at possibly an Oak and an Ash. He specified to the council that they would be quality trees that will provide nice shade in years to come. Alderman Gale Allman made a motion to approve the request, seconded by Alderman Bush-Wishon, passed with a unanimous vote.
In other business, Council heard from Dr. Judy Stivers, superintendent of the Drexel School, on a future FFA project geared toward the city lake in H.T. Smith Park. The project would include building wood duck nests, working to decrease cattails and algae within the lake, and planting vegetation that is conducive to wildlife. FFA wants to treat the area as a wetland, but not take the steps to get it designated as such. Alderman Allman suggested a work session with Tammy Bartholomew, sponsor of the local chapter, to discuss project details. Stivers noted that over half of the high school students could benefit from the project. Mayor Reece commented that draining the lake would nullify the FFA project and that the opportunity is great for the students. It was so decided to move forward with the work session.
