AAA School Safety Patrol membership is a position of honor.  Millions of boys and girls have served since the nationwide movement started in the early 1920s.  Today, more than 500,000 members are on duty each day of the school year, helping classmates on buses and at crossings near schools. This year, Drexel has joined this program supervised by Marcia Bailey, the sixth grade teacher. Currently sixth graders make up the patrols. Patrols are appointed by teachers and the principal with parental approval.  In the spring, 4th and 5th graders will be trained for the 2010-2011 school year. This year’s captains are Allison Jacobs and Carmen Vogt. The job of a patrol is to get students to school safely.  There is a patrol on each of the buses as well as patrols at the crosswalks around the school.
AAA School Safety Patrols benefit students, schools, and communities.  Students gain: safety awareness,
leadership, teamwork, pride, citizenship and respect for law enforcement. Schools benefit from
opportunities to promote traffic safety awareness, peer-to-peer education, character-building opportunities, a positive relationship with parents, law enforcement, and the community. The community benefits by having a safer environment for pedestrians and motorists.
The Drexel Elementary PTO donated funds to purchase the rain ponchos for the patrols to wear.
