City of Drexel to receive grant funding for water improvements; savings to you
The Board of Aldermen of the City of Drexel, Missouri met in Special Session to discuss Water System Improvements at City Hall on June 12, 2009. A quorum was established with all Board of Aldermen in attendance; twenty-five visitors were present.
Mayor Reece gave a brief overview of the water system improvement project and its progression over the last two years. He gave thanks to the last council, as well as current, and former City Administrator Mike Fisher as well. He then stated that an opportunity had become available for the city to apply for Stimulus Funding. He reported that City Clerk Kara Smith had been working on the paperwork and requirements for this and he turned the discussion over to her. Smith stated that funds had been made available for drinking water system improvements through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. She stated that after a recent public hearing in Jefferson City and a meeting of the Public Drinking Water Commission on Wednesday, June 10th, the City of Drexel’s Water System Improvement Project was slated to receive $2 million dollars in grant funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Smith further stated that the other $2.3 million would be funded through a loan within the same program. She went on to say that there are a few stipulations including a “Buy American” clause, that the funds cannot be used for the purchase of any land or easements, that the scope of services must be as presented, and that these shovel-ready projects which received funding must begin no later than February 2010.
