Be entertained this 4th of July

By STACY RICE, Managing Editor
The City of Drexel and the Drexel Lions Club have teamed up to offer another 4th of July filled with fun and excitement for the entire family.
It will be hard to top the 50th celebration of last year, but the Lions Club strives for an enthusiastic outcome, so look for a great time again this year... with a twist and a new schedule of excitement to keep you amused.
The 51st Annual “Fireworks in the Park” festivities will kick off this Sunday morning with a breakfast at the Community Center. The twist; there will be no celebratory parade this year. With the fourth falling on a Sunday, Lions members felt the parade could interfere with church goers, therefore omitting it altogether. Look for its return next year...
Club members have been working on a non-stop, fun-filled day that is sure to please just about everyone. Breakfast will be served from 6-10 a.m. Biscuits and gravy is on the menu, proceeds benefitting the Drexel Swimming Pool. Keeping with tradition, Lions members will offer a lunch menu, served in the air-conditioned Community Center from 11-1 p.m. Barbeque beef and pulled pork sandwiches with side and tea will be offered for $5, hot dog meals for the kiddos will be available too. From 5-7 p.m. visitors can enjoy the popular smoked chicken or baby back rib dinner with beans, slaw and tea for $7 for the chicken or $10 for ribs. Carry outs available. Hot dogs plates will be available too. Homemade desserts will be served.
Starting around 11:00 a.m., visitors can tune into the sounds of Doc Marsh and Friends as they play some country western style music in the Community Center. Starting at 1 p.m., Full House, a band focused on old time country western music, will too perform in the Community Center and from 2-5 p.m. Dr. Damon Dennis and Aaron Redburn will entertain with their musical talents in the outside pavilion.
Do you know how many hot dogs you can eat in a matter of seconds? How about watermelon? If you think you can top them all, then the 4th Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest and Watermelon Eating Contest could be just what you have been longing for. Competition times for both events will begin at 2 p.m. and will be held in the large pavilion in the park. There are no age restrictions, just sign and eat away! The first, second, and third place winners from both contests will take home stylish medals.
All throughout the day, kiddos can....
