Baby, it’s hot outside!

When Drexel temperatures soared into the upper 90s early this week,
children and adults ventured out to the Drexel Area Pool in search of relief. With sports and recreation on the minds of many this time of year, area Health Departments are sending out an important message.
Health Departments across the region issued a warning this week to athletes, parents, and coaches about participating in sports during hot weather. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, athletes who participate in vigorous workouts, especially when the heat index is in the 90s and above, are at high risk for developing heat-related illnesses.
While elderly, young children, and people with mental illnesses or chronic diseases are at the highest risk for heat-related illnesses, young and healthy individuals can succumb to heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities in hot weather.
