Cass County rabies alert lifted

Cass County was placed under a 90-day rabies alert on August 25, 2008 because a horse from the county tested positive for rabies. No rabid animals (wild or domestic) have been detected since then and the rabies alert has been lifted as of December 8, 2008. However, this action does not mean that rabies is no longer a threat in Cass County. Instead, it means that the level of rabies activity has apparently subsided from the higher level observed in August to its “normal” level.
Rabies occurs in Missouri throughout the year in mammals, primarily bats and skunks. It is occasionally found in dogs, cats, and other domestic species, which increases the risk to humans because of their close association with these animals.
