Big crowds packed Pleasant Hill last week for the 2009 Cass County Fair.
In fact, the 2009 fair attracted some of the biggest crowds in its 16-year history.
The weatherman contributed a lot to the success of this year’s county fair. Daytime high temperatures ranged from the mid-70s to mid-80s during the 6-day fair and the evenings were cool and comfortable.
Despite a trace of rainfall in the early morning hours on Wednesday and Thursday, the afternoons were sunny and comfortably mild.
A huge crowd of nearly 1,500 people packed the fairgrounds arena on Wednesday evening to hear popular country and western star Aaron Tippin perform. Tippin thrilled the audience with his popular hits that included You’ve Got to Stand for Something, Where the Stars and Stripes and Eagles Fly and others.
Tippin even assembled a child’s bicycle on stage and donated it to a pair of Marine sergeants for their annual “Toys for Tots” campaign. He stayed around after the concert to sign autographs and have his photograph taken for fans.
Huge crowds returned to Pleasant Hill the rest of the week to enjoy more live entertainment, youth livestock shows, carnival, motocross races, demolition derby, quilt and craft exhibits, antique and classic car show, bicycle rodeo, pet show and much, much more.
The highlight of weekend activities at the 2009 fair was a big parade that stretched from the city’s sports complex on Broadway to downtown Pleasant Hill. Grand marshal Gene Bohannon and his wife, Phyllis, of Pleasant Hill led the 2009 parade.
Pleasant Hill VFW Post #3118 won the plaque for the best walking unit, the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church was selected the best civic or church entry, Pleasant Hill American Legion Post #53 was judged the best community entry and a reproduction of an 1870 “Vis-a-Vis” carriage owned by the Burbach and Johnson families won the award for the best horse-drawn entry.
From the county’s largest watermelon to the popular “Super Farmer” competition, the 2009 Cass County Fair had it all.
“Everyone seemed to have a great time at this year’s fair,” said 2009 Cass County Fair Committee spokesman Randy Miller. “Hundreds of volunteers pitched in to help make the 2009 fair a success and they all did a great job.
“We can’t thank them enough for all the hard work that they do each and every year,” he added. “The Cass County Fair keeps getting bigger and better and we’re already working on plans for another big fair next year in 2010.”
