Drexel Star introduces new sports writer

By RICHARD HETTINGER
As I enjoyed being sports writer for my high school back in the 50’s, I am going to attempt to do the sports section of the Drexel Star justice. Back in the 50’s it seemed to me it was a lot easier when all you had to do was type it out and print the paper. With all the modern technology, now I have to learn the computer terms, digital camera operation with it’s many buttons, saving and deleting pictures etc. etc. I’m sure it will be better than the old mimeographed paper that we used to print.
I was asked to write a little bit about myself and my family. I am an Army Security Veteran with three years service. I spent 35 years in the United States Postal Service with the last 12 years as postmaster here in Drexel. I retired from the post office in 1992. I have worked as accountant and go-fer for Hettinger Excavating (owned and operated by my oldest son Royce) for the last four years.
I moved to Drexel in 1982 with my family, wife Ladone, sons Royce and Britain and daughter Brooke who all graduated from Drexel R-IV School. My family has grown as I now have four grandsons, four granddaughters and one great grandson.
I hope my future articles I write are not too boring, misunderstood, offending or just plain miss written. I know it is impossible to please everyone. A wise gentleman once told me, “You can please half the people half the time,” and I have found that to be very true.
Please bear with me as I try to learn all the new systems with Macintosh as I have always used Windows. I’m sure the articles will get easier and better as time passes.
