Drexel Lady Cats fall to local rivals

By RICHARD HETTINGER
On Monday night, February 15th, the long week started with the Hume Hornets visiting the local hardwoods. The girls won a thriller, 42-40. Coach Lane stated, “This was a very big win for the Lady Cats. The Hume Lady Hornets are a very solid team and they have beaten several teams that we play and will play in our district. Beating Hume was a great way to start our week of basketball.” The boys coasted to a 67-30 victory against the Hornets. These were both make up games.
Then, on Tuesday night, the 16th, the Adrian Blackhawks came crashing into town. After defeating the Lady Blackhawks in the Archie Tournament, the Lady Cats wanted to repeat the task.
The Drexel Lady Cat’s scoring started with a put back by Freeman and Kendrick with a 2 from 10 feet, but the good shooting and smooth play of Adrian’s Olivia Case, who shoots a 3 and then another Lady Blackhawk gets a 3 as Drexel falls behind. Vlieger goes to the line for 2 and later Gunnels makes a nice fake and lay up but Adrian has taken the lead after one by 8-9.
In the second period, Gunnels makes one of two frees, Vlieger to Gunnels for 2 and Vlieger swishes one from 6 feet. Adrian then went on a spurt with a Tallman three off the glass and 2 pointers by Case and Tallman. Gunnels makes a 3 but the good shooting of the players on this highly rated 2A school quickly let them lead into the half, Drexel 16, Adrian 24.
Tallman makes 2 “and 1” while Hughes gets a put back for Adrian. Freeman gets an assist from Gunnels for 2 while Hocker also gets an assist to Freeman for a nice shot from 10 feet. A fast break ending with Hotsenpiller to Kendrick for a lay up and the score is then Adrian 29 and Drexel 22 at the 4:53 mark of the 3rd. Kendrick makes a nice save on a ball headed for out of bounds but no conversion on the play. Hughes of Adrian scores again and the Lady Cats cannot find the range. Turnovers and low percentage shooting quickly lead to a 14 point deficit at the 2:20 mark. Freeman scores on a fast break and Sanders makes one from the 3 point line but unfortunately has a toe on the line for a 2. After three, Drexel 26, Adrian 38.
