Victory for the Bobcats


The Drexel boys basketball team started their season with a big victory over the Miami Eagles, 81-19. Drexel was seeded #1 in the WEMO Conference Tournament coming off a fantastic season last year.

Lady Cats win over Osceola in first round of WEMO tournament

The 2012-2013 basketball season kicked off for the Drexel Lady Cats Monday Night at Archie in the WEMO Conference Tournament. Drexel was seeded 4th and played the Osceola Indians, seeded 5th, in their first game of the season. The Lady Cats came away with the victory over the Indians 60-44.

Bernice Marcella Thomas 1919-2012

Bernice Marcella Thomas, 93, Drexel, MO, formerly of Milo, MO, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, MO. She was
born August 31, 1919, in Milan, IL, to Oscar Andrew Tanner and Florence May Coyne Tanner. She was married to Woodrow W. Weatherman on July 7, 1935, in Mountain Grove, MO, and he preceded her in death. She later married Earl M. Thomas in Cheyenne, WY, and he preceded her in death on April 9, 1970.

The 2012 -2013 varsity basketball season kicked off with the WEMO Tournament in Archie on November 26. Drexel's Varsity basketball girls' head coach is Jimmie Gentry and the Assistant is Billy Johnston. Last year the Lady Cat's record was 9-14. With the loss of Kayla Kaufman and Jessi Gunnels to graduation last year, the Lady Cats have two more coming onto the team; freshmen Allison Jacobs, and Jacy Bolton. The Lady Cats have only two seniors this year: Jacklynn Williams and Skyler Lancaster.

A beautiful fall evening is perfect for the UMC Thanksgiving Dinner

A beautiful fall evening brought out a record crowd Saturday night for the Community Thanksgiving Dinner sponsored each year by the Drexel United Methodist Church. It is always a fun time of visiting with friends who come from near and far.
The silent auction sparks much interest until the live auction starts. Then the fun really begins. The variety of auction items this year was amazing, from old newspapers dating back to 1969, to pies, woodworking, and beautiful kites. There was something for everyone.

Signs Letter of Intent to play volleyball


Karlie Stuteville, a Senior at Drexel R-IV and an amazing Volleyball player, sign a letter of intent to Southwestern to play Volleyball on Friday, November 16th.

Drexel R-IV hosts Thanksgiving Dinner for area senior citizens

Drexel R-IV hosted a Thanksgiving Dinner for seniors at the school in the south gymnasium on Tuesday, November 20th. Senior citizens enjoyed a Thanksgiving program. The Drexel Band members played piano, flute, clarinets, trumpet, saxaphone, bells, and violin for the seniors. London Collins presented "The History of Thanksgiving with a slide show and several students read Thanksgiving poems. The choir also sang during the program.

FFA hosts shoe drive

The Drexel FFA is hosting a Shoe drive starting now through the month of February. Shoeman Water Projects collects thousands of donated used and new shoes from school service projects, church mission projects, business drop locations and business in-house shoe drives.  These shoes are then exported to street vendors in places in Kenya, Haiti, and South America.  These shoe vendors now have shoes, which are a valuable product to sell at affordable prices.  The end users are people who do not have shoes and cannot afford to purchase new shoes.

Drexel lights up for Girls Night Out


During this time of year the sun sets early, which made the town of Drexel bright with all the businesses lit up for Girl's Night Out. On Wednesday, November 14th, the local business and vendors hosted their second Girl's Night Out. This time around vendors had some of their Christmas items out and promoted some wonderful sales and discounts. Shopping was spread out throughout the town this time, from Casey's to the Drexel Community building.

JH girls lose to Butler; defeat Midway

The JH Lady Cats lost to Butler on Tuesday, November 6 26-38. The Butler Lady Bears put intense defensive pressure on the JH Lady Cats the entire game and the JH Lady Cats did not handle the pressure very well. The JH Lady Cats will see the Lady Bears again in the Sherwood Tourney, we will be working on handling the pressure better in practice, so hopefully it will be a better contest the next time.
The JH Lady Cats B Team defeated the Lady Bear’s B Team on the same night. The JH Lady Cats B squad played a great game with a lot of hustle and intensity.

JH boys defeat Butler in three overtimes; Fall to Midway

On Tuesday, November 6, The Drexel JH Boys hosted the Butler Bears and won 42-35 in three overtimes. It was a very exciting game that was played hard by both teams. The Drexel Bobcats were able to handle adversity and succeed when the game was most important. Coach Cecil was very proud of the effort and determination his players showed in the game. With their first win of the season, the Bobcats were able to improve their record to 1-1 on the season. The Bobcats will host the Midway Vikings on Thursday, November 8, at 5:30.

Kindergartners make presentation to Drexel PTO

On Wednesday, October 7th, the Drexel Elementary PTO hosted a presentation from the Kindergarten class. Mrs. Andrea Gammon, Kindergarten teacher, had each student introduce themselves and announce the name of their leaf person they had made at school. The kindergartners then showed their parents and members of PTO songs they had learned.

Midway FFA Attends National Convention

The Midway FFA Chapter, along with members from the Miami, Sherwood and Adrian FFA Chapters attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana October 24-27. Members attending were; Katie Nance, Caitlin Chaffin, Courtney Yahnig, Erik Nance, Ryan Sparks, Megan Yahnig and Shelby Drake.

Drexel R-IV is pleased to recognize the November Students of the Month. The Students of the Month program, introduced at the beginning of the school year, is designed to give recognition to those students that go above and beyond what is expected of them.

Food for the holidays

Drexel's National Honor Society held a food pantry contest to collect food for the holidays for food pantries. This year, NHS member Jacklynn Williams chaired the event and was responsible for organizing, collecting, and counting food item that were brought in from the Elementary to the High School.
NHS held a contest for Elementary and High School to see which Elementary class could bring in the most food items and for High School the individual student who brought in the most items would win. The prizes were coupons to the Cat Stop.
The winning Elementary class was the 1st grade class.

Drexel R-IV students honor local veterans


Drexel R-IV School hosted a Veteran's Day Assembly on Monday, November 12th.
There were twelve veteran's at the assembly from Air Force, Army, Marines, and Navy. Master of Ceremonies, Jeny Otto - Student Council President, called the program to order and had everyone stand as Boy Scout Troop 241 presented the colors at the beginning of the Assembly. Everyone honored the flag with "The Pledge of Allegiance."
The Drexel Band played the National Anthem to honor our Nation as everyone sang along. Mikala Irvin read a poem titled, "The Blood Runs On."

Just recently Peter Newton Cameron, a resident of Sugar Creek township back in 1865 to around 1881, has a great great grandson that has become interested in knowing his heritage on his mother's side of the family tree.
Frank Furillo is the son of Bud Furillo a famous sports personality. His father had a newspaper column and radio show known as "The Steamer," named for steam rooms where the best sports stories told back in the day. Frank is coming up on his 60th birthday and has discovered a passion in life for genealogy besides other accomplishments of his life.

Drexel FFA Attends National FFA Convention


Eight members of the Drexel FFA experienced leadership and career development as they attended the 85th Annual National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Members boarded a tour bus Wednesday morning October 24th at 6:00 am along with members from the Butler, Rich Hill, Osceola and Lakeland chapters to make their way to Indy. Justin Frazee, Chapter Sentinel had been anticipating that morning for weeks!

Drexel Cross Country competes at State

The Drexel Cross Country runners had the opportunity to travel to Jefferson City to compete in the State Cross Country Meet. Drexel had 5 runners qualify for the State Meet. Two of those runners placed in the top 25 and received medals. Chase Reynolds and Jacklynn Williams, both Seniors, received medals for Drexel.

Drexel's season ends with loss to Midway in second round of Districts

Halloween Night was filled with lots of candy, spooky costumes and of course football. Drexel had to defeat the only team to give them a loss this year, the midway Vikings, to continue their season and advance in the playoffs. A great battle of both teams but the Bobcats fell short, 20-38 and ended a great season. Drexel's season ended with a final record of 9-2.
Drexel won the toss and elected to receive the ball while Midway's defense took the field. Drexel had a nice first offensive series but the 12 play drive was stopped after Midway intercepted a pass in the end zone.

Five Bobcat runners advance to state

The Drexel Cross Country Team ran last Saturday at their District meet to qualify for the State meet. Runners had to place in the top 15 to advance to State. Drexel will have 5 runners advancing to the State Cross Country Meet on November 3rd in Jefferson City. Seniors Chase Reynolds and Jacklynn Williams, Junior Jacob Antley, Sophomores, Sarah Cawby and Jenna Bartholomew all qualified to advance. The top 2 teams our of the District also advance, Drexel fell just short placing 3rd.

Bobcats dominate Appleton City Bulldogs in first round of districts

Drexel dominated over the Appleton City Bulldogs last Friday to start District play. Coach Nate Danneman commented on the game, "I thought we played pretty good this past Friday. Appleton City had a few good players missing with injuries, but I was still pleased with how well we played."

Billy Witter Hurt 1931-2012

Billy Witter Hurt age 81, of the New Lancaster area died Tuesday October 23, 2012 at his home. He was born on May 4, 1931 in Miami County, Kansas the son of Thomas and Ada Witter Hurt. He married Lois Evelyn Price on July 30, 1950; she preceded him death on December 9, 1994.
Billy worked his whole life as a dairy farmer. He was a member of he Calvary Baptist Church of LaCygne, the rural water district #1 board, the Fire Association Board in Drexel, Missouri, the New Lancaster Grange, and served as a project leader for the Sunny Ridge 4-H Club for many years.
