Area schools begin the 2010-2011 session this week and there are, for some, changes in scheduling or milk and meal prices. This year, there are nearly thirty new teachers and staff members among the six northern Bates and southern Cass County schools.

The Board of Aldermen of the City of Drexel, Missouri met in Regular Session on Monday, August 9th. Mayor Reece called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was held at City Hall. Citizens present were Boyd Smith, Janice South, and Jennifer Thomas. Presenters present were Chad Harrington of the Larkin Group, Muddy Waters of HD Supply, and Cary McDougal of Baron & Budd. City Staff present were Water Technician Russ Ream, Police Chief Jon Carpenter, and City Clerk Kara Smith. Mayor Kenneth Reece, Alderman Terry Mayfield, Alderman Doug Musick and Alderman Bob Thomas were in attendance.

Drexel R-IV School District is proud to introduce two new administrators to their already outstanding staff.
Bill Johnston has been named the new Superintendent of Schools.
He and his wife Carolyn have five children; Linzy, 18, Livia, 17, Tucker, 15, Jayvn, 14, and Braylen, 11. Carolyn is a guidance counselor at the Harrisonville High School.
A two-year-old Archie boy drowned last week while he and others were playing in a neighbor’s swimming pool. The drowning is believed to be an accident.
Kyler Ray Kelso, son of Kyle and Ashley Kelso, of Archie, died Wednesday, August 4, at the Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 7, at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, in Butler.
It’s almost time for Drexel kids to return to classes. On Monday, Drexel R-IV started a two-day enrollment schedule that included the mandatory enrollment of all students. Classes begin for all Drexel students on Friday, August 20th, with early release at 1 p.m. Pictured below right, Kristie Musick, elementary principal’s secretary, aids Jason Showalter and son, Gavin Kush, with enrollment papers. And above, Kelly Lacy, JH/HS principal’s secretary, receives the necessary enrollment forms from Shannon Wallace.

The first step the Cass County Sustainability Committee (CCSC) has taken toward its goal of promoting sustainability in Cass County is a recycling project. This project is a partnership between the CCSC and Town & Country Disposal, Inc. made possible with grant funding provided by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) Solid Waste Management District.

The Drexel Community Betterment Corporation (DCBC) met Tuesday evening, July 27th, at the Drexel School for their regular monthly meeting. Snacks for the meeting were sponsored by Stewart Liquor and Patty’s Hair Care. Taco Salad and fruit made a light and refreshing snack on a hot summer evening. Those present were Patty Dreher, Patsy Stewart, Sue Bush-Wishon, Lila Jones, Joe Ziegler, Carson Burke, Dave Alburty, Carol Pranulis, Marc Finke and guest speaker Melissa Freeman.
Luther E. Brewer, 81, formerly of Drexel, MO and Olathe, KS, passed away July 27, 2010 at his home in Daytona Beach, FL.
Luther was born in Amarugia, Missouri on July 5, 1929.
Services were Sunday, August 1st, at 1:00 p.m. at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS. Burial followed. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to the Central Auto Racing Boosters, 17580 Stubbs Station Rd., Platte City, MO 64079.
