The City of Drexel and the Drexel Lions Club have teamed up to offer another 4th of July filled with fun and excitement for the entire family.
It will be hard to top the 50th celebration of last year, but the Lions Club strives for an enthusiastic outcome, so look for a great time again this year... with a twist and a new schedule of excitement to keep you amused.
Subsequent testing of drinking water samples in Drexel have found only trace amounts of atrazine well below the maximum contaminant level, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources announced last Friday. This following a release from DNR last Wednesday, June 23rd, for high levels of the herbicide atrazine having been found in the city of Drexel’s public water supply. Atrazine is a common herbicide used to control broadleaf and grassy weeds. Atrazine is mainly applied to corn and soybean crops, but is also used on sorghum, sugarcane and Christmas tree farms.
The Drexel R-IV Board of Education met last Monday, June 21, in the ITV Conference Room. The meeting began at 6:30 p.m. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, and a moment of silence.
Joe Alburty of Mission, KS, Steve Alburty, of Kansas City, MO, and Carol and Dave Alburty of Drexel, MO wish their parents, Bill and Betty Alburty of Leawood, KS, a very happy 50th wedding anniversary. Jacoby Hotsenpiller, 11th grade student at Drexel R-IV High School, recently was named the Cinch Goat Tying Champion at the Kansas State High School Finals Rodeo held in Hutchinson, KS on June 10th through 12th.
In addition to receiving other awards and college scholarships given out at the state level, Hotsenpiller also received a pair of Cinch jeans and a NHSRA state event champion patch to put on er official competition shirt.
Danielle Nicole Burton Lomax, age 26 of Louisburg, KS, was suddenly taken away from her family on June 23, 2010.
Danielle was born on September 3, 1983 in Kansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Sharon Bishop and Michael Burton.

Maxine Rosa Ritter, 83, of Adrian, MO died Sunday, June 20, 2010 at Adrian Manor in Adrian. Maxine was born June 30, 1926 in Pleasanton, KS, the daughter of Lee and Mary (Voyles) Layland.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian, Missouri. Rev. Paul Burhart, Adrian Christian Church, officiated. Interment was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian.
Honorary casketbearers were Mike Domann, Chris Domann, Mark Pannell and Calvin Pannell. Casket bearers were Jerry Domann, Steven Ritter, Kevan Heil, Norman Cruse, Chuck Cunningham, and Jason Ford.
A Drexel man was injured in a single vehicle accident in Cass County, Tuesday June 15, 2010. The accident occurred at 6:55 p.m., on Route D, south of Route W, north of Drexel.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Ward R. Billings, 54, was traveling north in a 2000 Toyota, when he failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck an embankment.
Billings, who was wearing a seatbelt, received serious injuries. He was transported by the Life Flight air ambulance to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park Kansas.
The Board of Aldermen of the City of Drexel, Missouri met in Regular Session on Monday, June 14, 2010. Mayor Reece called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was held at City Hall. Citizens present were Boyd Smith, Janice South and Jennifer Thomas. Presenters present were Joe Ziegler and Jim Welborn. City Staff present were Water Technician Russ Ream, Police Chief Jon Carpenter and City Clerk Kara Smith.
Mayor Kenneth Reece, Alderman Terry Mayfield, Alderman Doug Musick, Alderman Kevin Shannon and Alderman Bob Thomas were in attendance.
Michael and Jessica Fink, and Garrett, are proud to announce the birth of their son and brother. He was born May 26, 2010 at the Hutchinson Kansas Hospital. He weighed 9 lbs. 6 oz. and was 21 inches long. He has been named Grant Michael Fink. His grandparents are Vicki Kimbrough of Amsterdam, MO, Roger Fink of Drexel, MO, and Mr. and Mrs. Allen Lyrn of Bowling Green, MO. Great-grandparents are Frankie and Carol Kimbrough and Frank and Shirley Fink , all of Drexel.

El Dorado Springs Postmaster William Michael (Mike) Fritts, 39, along with his wife, Pam, and their daughter, Jenna, had flown in their 1956 model Beech G35 single engine aircraft to a valley near Marble, about 125 miles west of Denver, CO, to vacation. Mike was going to be off work for some period of time while he recovered from recent shoulder surgery.
Christopher and Rhianna Thomas of Kansas City are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Melva Rose.
The young lady was born May 6, 2010 at North Kansas City Hospital. Melva Rose weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces and was 20 inches long. She has a 2 year old brother, Walden Christopher, to welcome her home. Proud Grandparents are Pat and Trudy Thomas of Harrisonville, MO and Lynn Hatfield of Coco, FL.
John and Alleene Dean of Drexel, Missouri are pleased to announce the engagement of their son, Philip Dean, to Kelsey Lewis, daughter of Charles and Carol Lewis of Amsterdam, Missouri.
Philip is a 2003 graduate of Drexel High School and a 2008 graduate of the University of Central Missouri with a degree in Art Education. Philip is employed as a teacher and football coach at Miami High School.
Drexel R-IV students said goodbye to another school year last Wednesday in an early out, kicking off summer break. Elementary Principal Jeff Levy gave fond farewells and entertaining smiles to his students for the last time. Make a Splash - - Read” is the theme for the children’s Summer Reading Program that began June 1 at all Cass County Public Libraries.
On Monday, June 7th, Drexel’s branch will kick off the program with a super “Water Fest” in the back yard.
Summer fun in and out of the water is the focus of crafts, story times, and activities at the branches in Archie, Drexel, Garden City, Harrisonville, Northern Resource Center - Belton, Pleasant Hill and the CCPL Bookmobile.
