Principal contracts narrowly approved

The Drexel Board of Education met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday, February 15th at 6:30 p.m. in the ITV/Conference Room of the school. Below are the unapproved minutes from that meeting.

Makynli Marie Blackwell
January 25, 2010
J.T. and Marci Blackwell of Willard, MO are the proud parents of a daughter. She has been named Makynli Marie Blackwell. Makynli was born Monday, January 25th at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, MO. She was 6 lbs. 6 oz. and 20 ¾ in. long. Maternal grandparents are Wanda Wilkins of Drexel, MO and B.C. Wilkins of Houston, TX. Maternal great-grandma is Renee Wilkins of Kearney, NE. Paternal grandparents are Tom and Donna Blackwell of Manes, MO, and Patricia Blackwell of Mansfield, MO.

Shannon, Groves to marry

Kelly and Delora Fritts along with Tom and Melissa Groves of Drexel, MO announce the engagement of their children, Mandy Ann Shannon and Edgar Thomas Groves. The couple were engaged in June 2009 and are planning a May 15, 2010 wedding. Both are graduates of Drexel R-IV and will begin their married life together in Jacksonville, N.C. Grandparents are Denny and Delores Shannon of Merwin, Marge and the late Charlie Fritts of Butler, Larry and Linda Kenney of Archie, and Melvin and Linda Carlson of Randolph, KS.

Drexel Bobcats meet their match at home

The Drexel Bobcats came out strong during their host game with the Adrian Blackhawks last Tuesday evening, but fell to defeat in the long run. To start, Joe Roberts scores with a semi hook shot jumper and a turn around jumper then Seba a 3, Bolton a 2, J. Roberts a put back and Cooley drives the lane for 2. Adrian’s Keenan Morrow is shooting well with a 3 and a long 2 along with the rest of the Blackhawks who quickly take a lead of 13-25 after one period.

Drexel Lady Cats fall to local rivals

On Monday night, February 15th, the long week started with the Hume Hornets visiting the local hardwoods. The girls won a thriller, 42-40. Coach Lane stated, “This was a very big win for the Lady Cats. The Hume Lady Hornets are a very solid team and they have beaten several teams that we play and will play in our district. Beating Hume was a great way to start our week of basketball.” The boys coasted to a 67-30 victory against the Hornets. These were both make up games.

Ruth M. Neal 1921-2010

Ruth M. Neal, 88 of Drexel, passed away Friday, February 19, 2010 at Adrian Manor in Adrian, Mo. 
Cremation, with visitation Friday, February 26, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with inurnment to follow in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Merwin Christian Church or Adrian Manor, which may be left in care of the funeral home.  An online guestbook is at www.mullinaxfh.com, where written messages may be left for the family.

Bob Morgan 1937-2010

John Robert Darrell Morgan, 72, of Sheldon, MO, left this life to be with Jesus for eternity on Sunday, February 14, 2010, at his home in Sheldon. He was born on November 13, 1937, in Bradleyville, MO, Taney Co., MO, to John Riley Morgan and Ida Bessie Johnson Morgan.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Roger Beach officiating Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, MO. Friends called up until the hour of service and the family received friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening, February 17, 2010.

Don’t just “throw it away”

When it comes to trash probably the general approach is to just “throw it away.” Actually, though, trash warrants a closer look and deeper understanding than this.
When we talk trash, we’re talking about the use of our resources, our air and water quality, land use, energy and money.

Council approves parade ordinance

The Board of Aldermen of the City of Drexel, Missouri met in Regular Session on Monday, February 8th.
Mayor Kenneth Reece, Alderwoman Sue Bush- Wishon, Alderman Terry Mayfield, Alderman Doug Musick, and Alderman Kevin Shannon were in attendance.
Citizens present were Patty Dreher, Cindy Orton, Paul Orton, Stacy Rice, Vic Shipley, Janice South, Bobby Thomas, and Jennifer Thomas.
Presenters present were Chad Harrington of the Larkin Group and Jeffrey Arnett of Tek Collect.

Betty Ann Moyer Chatfield 1917-2010

Betty Ann Moyer Chatfield, age 92, passed away February 14, 2010 at the Foxwood Springs Care Center in Raymore, MO.
Funeral Service were at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at Penwell-Gabel Louisburg Chapel 120 South Broadway Louisburg, KS. Burial followed in the Louisburg Cemetery. Visitation was from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

Happy 50th Anniversary ~ Kinney

James S. and Deanna Kinney will have a party for their 50th anniversary February 27, 2010 in Cleveland, MO at the Cleveland Lions Club from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All friends and neighbors are invited to attend.
Jim and Deanna met in December of 1959 and fell in love. They were married February 28, 1960. Five children were born of this union (James Jr., Raymond, Robert, Thomas, and Deborah). All reside near the Kansas City area.
They have twenty one grand children, several great and two great great grand children with more on the way.

Bobcats meet up with hot shooting Vikings

The Drexel Bobcats hosted the Chilhowee Indians last Friday for Courtwarming.
J. Roberts starts the game with an assist to Cooley, Cooley makes a 3, then it was Cooley to Seba to Bolton for a fast break lay up. J. Roberts with a put back, Seba to J. Roberts for 2 and Bolton ends the scoring in the first stanza with a 2 “and 1”. Behind the good play of Culbertson of Chilhowee, the Indians take a lead of 14-18 after one.

On Friday night, February 12th, the Lady Cats entertained the Chilhowee Lady Indians. Maybe entertain is not the right word as the Lady Indians didn’t seem to be enjoying the evening.

Couple with local ties adopts baby with Russian heritage

After spending two years and six months in the adoption process, the couple are home with their new baby... finally!

On December 4th of 2009, Melissa and Francis Busch made an exciting trip to Russia to adopt their one-and-a-half year old son, Tristan Roman Busch. After spending two years and six months going through the stress of filling out adoption papers, letters of recommendation, medical examinations, and lots of financial work, the couple took all their determination and excitement of having a son to a three week adventure to Krasnoyarsk, Russia!

Drexel to host Chilhowee Friday night with Courtwarming festivities taking place.

Despite a snow day on Monday and a teacher work day on Friday, Bobcat spirit shows up and down the halls at Drexel R-IV School. Pop in this week and you will see students decked out in Disney costumes and favorite college team attire as the entire student body partakes in fun and exciting activities throughout this week for the upcoming Courtwarming.

Bobcat Football in a new District for 2010 and 2011

henever the Missouri State High School Activities Association announces new football classification and district assignments, there are sure to be a few surprises.
And the two-year district cycle for the 2010 and 2011 seasons, released recently by MSHSAA, has not only produced surprises but sighs of relief for many area coaches.

Lady Bobcats run over Lady Vikings

Highlights of this game begin with a blocked shot and retrieval of the ball by Gunnels and on the offensive end of the floor Freeman goes to the line making one of 2. Kendrick makes one from 14 feet and later passes to Freeman for 2 more. Hocker intercepts a Lady Viking pass and is immediately fouled. At the 3:56 mark of the first Drexel 5, Midway 0.

Drexel Booster Club members approve purchase of new volleyball net system

The Drexel Booster Club met Wednesday February 3rd, 2010 in the school library.  Present were: Joyce Sanders, President, Pam Bolton, Treasurer, Lorrie Wilson, Robyn Seba, Lacey Gunnels, Doretta Moles, Jennifer Thomas, Dennis Bolton, Jane Williams, Dr. Judy Stivers, and Jennete West.

Suspects arrested; possibly linked to Drexel break-ins

Drexel residents may be able to sleep a little easier knowing that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the break-ins in and around the Drexel community.

Gov. Nixon applauds efforts of Missouri students to assist Haiti’s children

Gov. Jay Nixon applauded the selfless giving demonstrated by students at elementary and secondary schools in every corner of the state in efforts to assist children affected by the devastating earthquakes in Haiti.

Rep. Largent visits with DCBC members; optimistic of chances with Missouri Main Street Connection project

The Drexel Community Betterment Corporation met for the first time in the new year on Tuesday, January 26th from 5:30-7 p.m., at InnovaPrep on Main Street. The evening snacks were catered by David Kite and Viengsavanthong (Vinnie) Elliott, sponsored by InnovaPrep. Dave made turkey and ham sandwiches, with barbeque sausages and side dishes were complemented by Vinnie’s fresh sushi. Dessert was tasty homemade oatmeal cookies made by JoAnn Cawby. Francis Paul Shirley, Jr., age 83, of LaCygne, KS, formerly of Louisburg, KS, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, KS. He was born July 1, 1926 in Seneca, MO, the son of Francis Paul, Sr. and Nellie Chester Shirley.

Happy 50th Anniversary ~ Webb

The children of B.T. and Joyce (Case) Webb announce their parent’s 50th Wedding Anniversary. B.T. and Joyce were married on February 14, 1960 at the Amsterdam Methodist Church in Amsterdam, Missouri. They have been blessed with three children, Robin Moore of North Kansas City, Basil Trent Webb and wife Laurie, and Brenden Ward Webb and wife Laura, both in Overland Park, Kansas, plus seven grandchildren and a close circle of many friends. The couple live in Drexel, MO. A reception for B.T. and Joyce will be February 14th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Drexel Community Center.

Bobcats open Archie Tourney with a win

Seba starts the scoring with a jumper from 6 feet then sacrifices his body and draws a charge against a Lone Jack Mule in their first game of the 80th Archie Tournament. Drexel is a 3 seed and Lone Jack a 6, but a very good 6. After back to back possessions the halftime score was Bobcats 30, Mules 26. Final in overtime: Bobcats 72, Mules 67.

Our 4th seeded Lady Cats started a little slow last Monday against the 5th seeded Ballard Lady Bulldogs but were able to record a 28 to 16 lead by half time none the less.
