Meet your 2009 Homecoming candidates

Bobcat pride and spirit is roaring throughout the hallways at Drexel R-IV. The Drexel students and community is anxiously awaiting this years homecoming festivities this Friday night. The theme is “Blast From the Past.” Throughout the week, students of Drexel R-IV have been participating in spirit week. Monday was Wear Pink for the Susan G.

KCP&L partners with Drexel Lions Club to aid homeowners

On Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 KCP&L continued its “Renewable Energy from the Heart” campaign here in Drexel. This campaign is a series of volunteer projects throughout the KCP&L service territory to benefit thousands of people and strengthen working relationships among employees. The effort began in June 2009, and all KCP&L employees have an opportunity to volunteer on a specific project near their work location.

Louisburg teenager killed by train

A Louisburg teenager is dead after being struck by a train in Cass County late Saturday or early Sunday.
According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, Zachary D. Messmer, 19, was walking near the Kansas City Southern tracks at East 319th Street and Davenport Road when he was hit by the train.
The location is in southwest Cass County, near Drexel, is close to the Missouri/Kansas state line. A representative of the Jackson County medical examiner’s office pronounced Messmer dead at the scene at 12:44 a.m.

Partnership offers energy incentives

Two local companies teams up to offer
customers bill credits.
Missouri Gas Energy and KCP&L announced that they have entered into a joint agreement to offer their mutual customers up to $1,200 in bill credits for making energy efficient improvements to their homes.

DARE raffle claims local teacher as winner

The theme last year for the Cass County D.A.R.E. Program was “Reach for the Stars Not for Drugs.” With that said, Deputy Christine Eddleman and Cpl. Kevin Tieman got together and decided to have a quilt made using some of the past DARE t-shirts. Terry Tieman, Cpl. Kevin Tieman’s mother made and donated the quilt and Jes Dan Quilting quilted it for her. Tieman then donated it to the D.A.R.E. Unit for one lucky winner to win during a raffle to raise money for the program. Tickets were sold at each one of the six Cass County Schools and their D.A.R.E.

District embraces two new employees

With the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year well underway at Drexel R-IV, the school is introducing two additional staff personnel. Cindy Drury has begun her journey as the new School Counselor, and Darrah Munter joined the staff late into last years’ school year as the School Nurse. As you may recall, Clarence Kellogg retired as the School Counselor last year after serving 13 years with the district. Munter replaced Cindy Belt, who moved on to pursue other nursing opportunities.

Drexel FFA represents in MO State Fair

Stephen C. Cook 1973-2009

Stephen Christopher “COLDPOP” Cook, age 35, passed away unexpectedly on September 8, 2009 at his home in Lenexa, KS.
Funeral service were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 2009, at the Louisburg United Methodist Church, 249 N. Metcalf, Louisburg, KS 66053, with burial following in the Louisburg Cemetery. Visitation was Friday, September 11, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Louisburg United Methodist Church.

George C. Bielski 1923 - 2009

George C. Bielski, of Drexel, MO, died Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at his home at the age of 86 years, 5 months and 2 days.
Funeral services with full Military Honors, under the Auspices of the National Guard Alpha Team - American Legion #71, was held at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Harrisonville, MO with burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. Father Paw Lwin officiated the services. Visitation was from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, August 31 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville.

James Sutton 1941 - 2009

James “Jim” Sutton, 67, Drexel, MO, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at his home.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville, MO. Visitation was held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, August 28 at the Atkinson Chapel in Archie, MO. Burial will in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, MO. Billie Sue Jenkins 1934 - 2009

Mrs. Billie Sue Jenkins of Drexel, Missouri was born January 27, 1934 near Urich, Missouri the daughter of E.J. Mendenhall and Marjorie Louise (McCoy) Mendenhall.  She departed this life Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at her home at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 29 days.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Salvation Lutheran Church near Harrisonville, Missouri. Pastor Jeffery Young officiated the service.

Drexel First Baptist Church to celebrate 80th year dedication

On October 4th, 2009, the Drexel First Baptist Church will be celebrating the 80th year of dedication of the original building. Worship Service will begin at 10:15 a.m. and will feature the rededicating of the building and observing the Lord’s Supper, all followed with a pot luck dinner. From 1:00-2:00 p.m. the public is invited to view the Sanctuary.

Lady Cats takes third in Archie Tournament

By RICHARD HETTINGER The Lady Cats entered pool play in the Archie VB Tournament facing Butler, Hume and Adrian in their pool. On Tuesday night of last week they ‘came to play’ as head coach Busch later states. In the Butler Lady Bears match Drexel did look sharp and played well with the following stats: Serving Points; Lane 9, Freeman 7, Gamache 7 and Collins 6. Aces; Lane 4, Collins 2 and Gamache and Freeman with one each. Kills; Hocker 3, Lane, Gunnels and Gamache with 2 each. Collins and Freeman each had 3 assists, Gunnels 2 and Vlieger 1. Gunnels also had 2 blocks.

Bobcats win first game of season

As this game was played on September 11, McAuley School gave out American Flags for everyone to wave during the National Anthem before the game. It was also homecoming for the McAuley Knights. A nice prayer and pledge was given to honor all those who lost their lives and also to honor all our young heroes fighting for our country.

Drexel does well in first meets

The Drexel Cross Country Team headed to Midway for the first Two-Mile meet of the season. Nine schools participated in the meet.
The Drexel Lady Cats took the girls 3rd place finish in the overall varsity division with a team score of 71.
Jacklynn Williams finished in 9th in a time of 14:37. Tara Freeman finihsed 13th with a time of 15:27. Jessi Gunnels finished in 17th with a time of 15:37. Nicole Vlieger finished in 21st with a time of 16:02. Jessica Sanders finished 29th with a time of 18:27 and Dayton Antley wrapped up in 29th with a time of 13:42.

Lady Cats travel to Lakeland for first matches of season

In their first game of the season last Tuesday evening, the Lady Cats survived the long bus ride to Lakeland to do battle with the Lady Vikings. It was noticed on the way down that the school is well named because while traveling south from Clinton many parts of Truman Lake are seen.

Bobcats meet Osceola Indians on home field

On a nice rainy wet evening, a perfect night for football, the Drexel Boy Scouts presented the colors and the Bobcat Band played the National Anthem before the Bobcats and Indians took the home field last Friday night. Booker Page was honored to carry the “Big Hit Stick” leading the Bobcats onto the field. Senior Captains, Tony Otto, Zack McMahan, Joe Roberts and Blake Hadley, won the toss and chose to receive the opening kick-off.
